Why emergency lighting matters
When the power fails, emergency lighting keeps escape routes, stairwells and exits lit so people can leave the building safely. In England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the responsible person for a building accountable for this.
Emergency lighting in the UK is covered by BS 5266. It sets out where lighting is needed and how it should be tested: a short functional test every month and a full rated duration test every year, with the results kept in a logbook. We carry out both tests on existing systems, as well as designing and installing new ones.
Older emergency fittings often start failing their tests as batteries age. Replacing them across a whole site in one project is usually simpler than chasing individual failures.

How often should emergency lighting be tested?
BS 5266 recommends a short functional test every month and a full rated duration test once a year, with the results recorded in a logbook. We carry out both tests.
Can you test emergency lighting we already have?
Yes. We carry out monthly and annual testing of existing emergency lighting systems, not only the ones we have installed. At Newland Gardens in Hertford we carry out the annual three hour test on the emergency lighting we replaced.
Do you design emergency lighting systems?
Yes. Our own team designs the emergency lighting, working out where fittings are needed along the escape routes, in line with BS 5266.
